To get to Sentosa-Universal Studios, you have to take an MRT ride going to Harbourfront. Don’t be side tracked and start shopping at Vivo City Mall, Harbourfront. It would’nt be nice to carry along shopping bags with you. The very mall is your gateway to Sentosa monorail which located at the 2nd or 3rd level. Prepare en exact amount of $3 dollar coins (SGD) for a round trip ticket to Sentosa. Ticket booths are stationed before entering the monorail platform. A few minutes before going down the 1st station, look around and expect the feeling of excitement.

WATERFRONT station. Alight the first station. Prepare your entrance fee ($66 – weekday and $70+ on a weekend). I would highly recommend that you visit on a weekday. Not only can you save but you also lessen the hassle of long queues or paying extra for the universal express (access pass to all the rides without falling In line).

Just a few steps away and you’ll see the main entrance. Get a bruchure map and make a schedule/checklist of all the rides. Another tip, weather is so unpredictable nowadays so I suggest you bring a small umbrella with you. It can protect you either from a strong heat or storm. You really would’nt know.

Unfortunately, it was a rainy/stormy day for us. We had to tour with an umbrella. We had to do the indoor activities first while waiting for the rain to subside. Umbrellas can be hassle to bring along but the good part is they have locker rooms that can be rented. They are stationed near each ride which requires passenger to stay handsfree. It’s free for the first 30 minutes. Pay extra $3 for succeeding usage. You would also need the locker to leave your extra clothes. Expect to get wet expecially if you plan to ride the Rapids.

WET, WET, WET

Waters are strategically located in different areas. It saves you a few dollars than buying a $2 dollar drinking water per small bottle. If you get hungry, use your food voucher worth $10 dollars. You’ll never go wrong with their burgers. It would even cost you less than eating rice because you can buy two for around $10.

When filled and almost settled, tap off the day by checking out some cool stuffs to take home. By the way, your ticket also includes a $10 voucher for souvernir items. Though the amount is too low to get you nice key chain (for collectors out there) at least you can always add a few bucks. As for me, I chose to buy sweet goodies instead. Never been fond of collecting small items.

And because of such demand and popularity, race packets has obviously becoming pricey every year. So for me, it’s time to become wise. Here are my 2010 tips in choosing races:

1. Review your past race experiences. Since most running events can already be plotted in your race calendars, try to remember the moments when you most enjoy your runs and basically the times you felt you received your money’s worth. (I had a quick thought of KOTR and Condura of 2009 )

2. Check out the race organizers. The success of each event mostly depend on them. Race orgs who have been consistent in protecting their names to avoid disastrous events are one of the things you should seriously consider.

3. Budget. Spread out your budget all throughout the year. Allocate budget for your trips, hostels, food, etc. Think of people who might be interested to join you especially in your long trips so you can share with the gas expense Being with your running buddies/family members will create a fun, bonding experience that starts before, during and after each event.

Also, try to get discounts by registering early or in group. It’s one of the best ways to save. Although, don’t get too excited and register too early. You might get caught up with a more important activity and in the end lose your registration money down the drain.

4. Replace the races you will miss to train for your planned events. It’s good to see your names listed in race results once in awhile but on different note, you may say that it’s not really a loss if you’re still able to run your best during those times. Okay lang maka miss ng event paminsan-minsan.

5. Try new routes. To fuel your excitement, search for event places which you have not tried yet. I can still remember my first trail run at Clark Sacobia last year. The day before the trail run, I was on an adventure ride with my husband and kid, searching for a place to stay overnight to prepare for ‘d’ day. Everything else was a discovery. Truly memorable.

This 2010 will be another discovery trip. My first official race for the year and my second trail run. My trail running shoes will be resurrected once again. Me and my hubby will be running at TNF Nuvali. I have not thought of trail running as the sweetest way to spend a Valentine. Nonetheless, we’ll see how this thing would turn out. I’m quite excited now.

It brings great joy to be with friends and families during the Christmas season. So rarely do I see all of them in one table to celebrate. I have two perspectives to every addition in the family. One is I am happy because I see a new generation rising up from the clan. But the other side of it makes me contemplate on seriously changing all my creams to anti-aging.

Kidding aside, each family occasion is one thing I have not missed this Christmas. You can only choose from several thrown parties to attend to but I keep only those I hate to miss. Let me share with you the seven Christmases I’ve been to this season and partly introduce my families.

#1 Christmas with my small group

This family is called a ‘small group’. We usually meet every Tuesday to share life experiences and talk about how God’s word can practically be applied in every situation we have. I’m so glad to have a spiritual family with whom I can share the details of my life. During the early part of December, we had a Pinoy celebration with our partners and kids.

#2 Christmas with my Instituto friends

I somehow introduced my friends from Instituto in my previous blogs. For us, a get together is a must as a year ended activity. Our chosen venue was Café Juanita. We enjoyed everything about the place especially the food. Thanks to Coy who has been there the whole time to organize everything. She’s the one wearing black, haha. Obviously, we were all in black. As suggested by our organizer, this is to diffuse the striking patterns from the place and to get nice photo results.

I’ve never been to a Christmas lunch with an extended family (of my husband’s) this BIG. My daughter, the 50th great grandchild of Taki’s Lola Gloring enjoyed the most.

The Cuevas had a Pinoy Christmas dinner with some ‘balikbayans’. This is so different from the usual ‘handaan’ because there’s tuyo and champorado. Para lang sa mga balikbayans — MISMO! We were so full during dinner that we had to say ‘no’ to noche buena.

#7 Christmas with the Dizon-Araza’s

This would be the last Christmas party for the year. Let me introduce my family (mom side). Our party usually have games, wine/drinks, gift giving (my mom being every year’s Santa) and our newly added activity – karaoke!!!

Well of course it’s Christmas. Maybe it’s just me but the most part I enjoy doing during this season is wrapping presents. It’s especially challenging when I devise ways on how I can optimize my gift wrappers. The more gifts you’re able to wrap in one sheet, the better. The only unwrapped gift (the exception) to our Christmas tree, is Taki’s gift to me.

Last year, I received a Mizuno singlet from my husband which fits me well (after trying it on first). Surely, everyone would say: “where’s the excitement there?” BUT we had our share of experiences. Admittedly, Taki and I think that he is no good in choosing gifts for me so he decided to ask me what I want even before Christmas day. We both agreed to simply ask each other what we want to get in exchange every year. The set up is ongoing for the past three-four years and it totally works fine. This year he’s getting me another Mizuno to match my singlet, a pair of tights. He could’nt believe that I can fit into an XS now so he asked me to fit (again). I told him that I’ve already tried the ‘XS’ before but he insisted. And guess what he told me after fitting..’you might want to try an ‘S’? Ggrr..:D

Oh well, i’m playing with my thoughts again. Right now, my mind is fixated on vacation. Finally, I’ll be freed from work for almost two weeks. Ah! I’ll be free to choose the dates and times when I could run without thinking of rushing to/from work. Free to try other routes. Free to savor and sip a coffee to the last drop. Free to move and play with my daughter. Free to date my husband and free to worship anytime of the day. Oh how good it is to focus on things which really matter in life (family, church, running and friends).
